A Full Few Days and a Change of Pace

September arrived with that familiar feeling that there is suddenly a great deal to do before the snow flies. Fortunately, I’ve had an extra pair of hands here to help me make a start. My sister has been visiting for the past few days and we’ve gotten an astonishing amount done - the start of some new fencing is in place, nearly all of my firewood is stacked, the new ceiling is up in the kitchen, we repositioned the duck coop for winter and I now have a good plan for revamping my garden beds.

There has been some creative prompt writing tucked in among all that physical work along with twice-daily dips and dog walks to the Basin. And for the past three nights we had dinner with my mom followed by rousing games of gin rummy and triple solitaire. It has been productive, creative, companionable and exhausting.

The ducks are not entirely pleased with the new layout. I've discovered that any significant change to their yard or coop is met with considerable suspicion. In my experience it generally takes them about two days to decide that a change is survivable

I may need to grant myself the same 2 day adjustment period.

The horses meanwhile have been much neglected while I concentrated on other projects and it's time for my attention to swing back toward them. The remaining firewood can wait, the garden beds are still only a plan, and there will always, always be another section of fencing to finish. For the next few days, I'm going to take on fewer projects, get a little more rest and spend some lovely unhurried time with Baci and Pretty.

Perhaps that is part of preparing for a new season too: not simply getting everything done but noticing where your attention is most needed next

There isn't a new Color Drop this week - the colors are now arriving every other Wednesday - but there is plenty of color waiting in the shop and online.
