This was my view the other morning at Geary’s Beach. I looked out and saw that band of dark blue stretching across the horizon and thought, there it is. The color I’ve been working with all week. I had been struggling to name it, and suddenly the islandscape did it for me.

Low tide, dark granite ledges scattered along the shore, and beyond them the ocean and sky settling into a deep band of blue. It’s a color that always makes me pause.

A Note About Limited Color Drops

Living and working on Vinalhaven means my business has always followed the rhythm of the island. The shop is wonderfully busy during the summer months when visitors arrive, but for most of the year my website is where new colors first appear.

These weekly Color Drops are part of my effort to spread the work more evenly throughout the year and share the newest pieces with all of you, wherever you live. I’ve also started making smaller batches of each color, which lets me play with more ideas, experiment more often, and bring new colors into the world more frequently.

One thing I hear often from longtime customers is:
“I’ll wait to see it in the shop this summer,” or “I’ll pick one up when I’m back on the island.”

I completely understand that instinct. At the same time, the way these colors are made means that each one is truly a limited run.

I work from specific sheets of glass, and once that material is used up the color is finished. Because I’m making smaller batches now, some colors move through the studio fairly quickly. Occasionally I can make more as a special order, but that depends on whether I still have the glass and it’s usually more expensive because I’m producing just a few pieces rather than working at scale.

So if a color speaks to you when you see it, that’s usually the best moment to bring it home.

There will always be new colors on the horizon, but each one only visits for a little while.
