Forget-Me-Not arrived in the studio at the same time the island tipped fully into spring. One day the landscape still felt brown and sleepy from winter and then almost overnight the roadsides, fields, and yards began filling in with bright green grass, cheerful yellow dandelions, and tucked in among all that brightness are the forget-me-nots, tiny periwinkle blue flowers quietly catching the eye again and again.

Forget-Me-Not necklaces carry that soft blue-violet glow that seems to appear everywhere this time of year once you start noticing it. Islandscape Bracelets

The newest Islandscape Bracelets have just landed online, continuing my ongoing collaboration with painter Elaine Crossman of New Era Gallery. These bracelets begin here in my studio as small kiln-worked fused glass stones inspired by the shifting colors of island life, sea greens, foggy lavenders, tidal blues, golden light, wildflower pinks, and the particular combinations of color that seem to exist only along the Maine coast. Elaine then responds to those colors, creating tiny abstract landscapes within each bracelet through the arrangement of the stones themselves.

What I love most about this collaboration is that each one becomes its own conversation about color, light, movement, and place. Together they carry that same spirit of noticing that inspires so much of our work, the fleeting color combinations, the small shifts in weather and season, the moments that might pass by unnoticed if we are not paying attention. Spring is arriving in full color here on the island. The gardens are beginning to wake up, the harbor is catching that unmistakable late-May light, and New Era Gallery is opening its doors once again for the season. This year marks their 25th season, something worth celebrating all on its own.

Please join Elaine Crossman and the gallery community on Saturday, May 23 from 10:00–7:00, with light refreshments from 5:00–7:00. It’s always one of those weekends that feels like the true beginning of summer on Vinalhaven, full of art, conversation, familiar faces, and the energy of another creative season beginning.

This week’s blog post started with an Annie Dillard quote and somehow led me back to splitting firewood by hand on the edge of Hancock Pond. What followed was a reflection on labor, attention, “simple living,” and the strange realization that sometimes the work itself is part of what warms us.
