Dear Subscriber First Name, Lately I’ve been thinking about color and light, and how much they change with the seasons. One week the world is still quiet and brown, and the next there are small flashes of green, longer evenings, and a different quality to the air. I feel it in my work and in my body. Movement helps. Color and light help. They steady me. This time of year always carries a little charge. Living in a community with two distinct populations—the quieter year-round island and the bright rush of summer visitors—can sometimes feel like living in two different towns. There’s so much energy building toward summer that it’s easy to start racing ahead in my mind, wondering if I’ll get everything done before it arrives. But anxiety isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes it’s simply energy moving through the system. The trick, I think, is remembering to stay here while it moves. One of my favorite quotes by Natalie Goldberg says, “Every moment is enormous, and it is all we have.” I try to hold on to that this time of year, when the days lengthen and everything begins to shift. That feeling of the season turning found its way into this week’s color. After months of gray granite, brown bark, and last year’s burnished leaves, the first bright greens appear almost overnight. Tiny shoots pushing through the soil, glowing against the quiet browns of late winter. Hello Spring.
