I’ve come to believe that inspiration happens in the course of ordinary life. A conversation in the store. A walk in the woods, by the water, or simply through town. A morning swim. Or maybe… the color of someone's hair.

Several years ago, a young woman named Kye walked through my front door with the most gorgeous turquoise hair, and I couldn't stop thinking about the extraordinary shade of blue-green that caught the summer light. That brief encounter eventually became one of my favorite colors, and after waiting patiently for the right season, Kye has finally returned.

I've also included a poem this week that speaks to that same quiet practice of noticing. I hope you'll enjoy both as much as I have.

Studio Notes: Come Find Me

One of the things I've realized this summer is that not everyone knows where to find me these days, so here's a little reminder! WindHorse Arts is now just a few doors farther up Main Street. I have my own entrance and my own shop, located inside the New Era Gallery building, and it's still the same WindHorse Arts you've always known.

If you're heading into town for groceries, the post office, or simply an afternoon stroll, I'd love for you to stop in and say hello. Whether you're looking for this week's Color Drop or just want to catch up for a few minutes, the door is open.

Words Worth Sharing

More than a decade ago, I was listening to a podcast when I first heard Arundhathi Subramaniam read this poem. I don't remember the topic of the conversation. I only remember that, at the very end, she read Poems Matter, and I found myself sitting perfectly still until the last line. I promptly ordered her book, When God Is a Traveller, and have returned to this poem again and again over the years.

This one has stayed with me because it gently argues against perfection. It celebrates frayed edges, places where colors bleed together, and the spaces where thought can wander. When she writes that "poems matter because they have holes," I hear something much larger than poetry. I think about people, friendships, and stories. It reminds me that what gives life its depth isn't that everything is neatly tied together. It's the openings. The places where we bring our own experience, and where light has room to enter.

Poems Matter

It was snobbery perhaps
(or habit)

to want
perforation,

to choose cotton, for instance,
with its coarse asymmetries,
over polyester
or unctuous rayon.

But this, I suppose,
is what we were looking for all along -
this weave
that dares to embrace

air,

this hush of linen, these frayed edges,
these places where thought
runs

threadbare,
where colours bleed into
something vastly blue
like sky,

these tatters
at peace almost
with the great outrage
of not being around.

It's taken a long time
to understand
poems matter
because they have holes.
