Quarry Reflection is inspired by late spring on Vinalhaven, when the new leaves sparkle yellow green against the darker spruce and the quarry water shifts between dark blue and green depending on the light. Layered fused dichroic glass captures those changing reflections in a limited edition color run designed to carry the feeling of the island into everyday life.

Quarry Reflection Bracelet

Quarry Reflection is a color built from layers: spring leaves, deep spruce greens, granite edges, and cold quarry water reflecting everything back at once.

This bracelet wraps those shifting colors around the wrist in linked fused dichroic glass stones that catch the light differently with every movement. Bright green emerges first, but flashes of yellow green and cool blue begin to surface as the bracelet turns in the light. A piece designed to feel both grounded and luminous at the same time.

Looking for something creative and memorable to do with your peeps this summer? Design Your Own fused glass workshops are perfect for small groups of 5-10. Gather friends, family, wedding guests, or fellow island visitors and spend a few hours cutting glass, layering color, and making something with your hands while surrounded by the beauty of the island. No experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to play with color and light together.

The Cost of Making by Hand

For twenty five years, silver was simply one of the quiet constants in my studio. Something I ordered when I needed it, factored into my spreadsheets twice a year, and mostly didn’t think too hard about. Until suddenly, in less than six months, the price exploded and this background material became something I was checking almost daily before placing an order.

This week on the blog I’m sharing a little behind-the-scenes look at the economics of handmade work, how global markets ripple all the way down to a tiny island studio in Maine, and the unexpectedly satisfying experience of returning to making my own ear wires by hand again after years away from the process.

Island Notes

The crows have discovered the ducks are laying again, which means spring has officially entered its annual phase of “who gets to the eggs first?” Sadly, the crows are currently outperforming me. Every day feels a bit like a scavenger hunt so not all is lost.

Other than that, spring is springing in all directions. Seeds are beginning to go into the ground, trays of seedlings are hardening off in the greenhouse, and I have once again started far too many tomato plants. Apparently every January I look through seed catalogs convinced I possess both unlimited garden space and the organizational skills and time of a Victorian estate gardener. By May, reality gently sets in - anyone want some tomato seedlings?

I also finally stepped into the world of barefoot shoes and I have to say, I completely understand the enthusiasm now. Since they arrived, I’ve already walked at least half of the Vinalhaven Land Trust trails, happily wandering through mud season, spruce needles, granite, and all the small signs of spring starting to return to the woods.

Best of all, the shoes turned out to be exactly what I was hoping for. Comfortable, grounded, and somehow making even ordinary walks feel a little more connected to the landscape underfoot.
