Monday’s blizzard, the one that tangled up New York and Boston, brushed past us and left lots of drifting snow on Vinalhaven. I woke to a world remade. My gardens folded into soft mounds. The path to the barn erased. The woodpile wearing a thick white coat. Even the horses stood quiet, their breath rising into air that felt newly scrubbed.

And still, the light is growing. The sun hangs on a little longer each afternoon, catching the edges of the drifts and turning everything bright and hopeful. That’s the feeling of Burnished right now. A deep ember red with a copper glow at its core. Warm. Steady. A quiet pulse of heat as winter begins to loosen.

It’s our bridge into March. From this grounded glow, we move toward tidal greens and clear harbor blues. Snow on the ground. Color on the horizon.

March 3 Lobby Day — Standing with Wabanaki Nations

On March 3, Mainers will gather in Augusta for Lobby Day to support legislation that would restore fairness and sovereignty to the Wabanaki Nations.

I live and work on the unceded homelands of the Wabanaki people. That isn’t just a line I say. It’s something I carry. The bills being discussed, including LD 785 and LD 395, are about correcting longstanding inequities in how federal laws apply to the Wabanaki Nations here in Maine compared to other federally recognized tribes across the country.

At its heart, this effort is about self-governance, equity, and honoring sovereignty.
