Color, Curiosity, and a Whole Lot of Fun
Each year I host a series of fused glass workshops where people gather around the table to explore color, learn a few new skills, and make something beautiful with their hands.
Last year’s workshops were filled with creativity, laughter, and some truly wonderful pieces. I’m excited to do it all again this year.
Looking Back at Last Year
There’s something special that happens when a group of people gathers around a table full of glass.
Some arrive excited. Some arrive a little unsure. Many say the same thing as they walk in the door:
“I’ve never done anything like this before.” And then we begin.
Glass gets cut, and ideas take shape. Before long the room fills with that particular joy that comes from making something with your hands. Conversations spark across the tables, tools are shared, and laughter follows the occasional unexpected turn in a design.
By the end of the workshop everyone leaves with something entirely their own — a small piece of glass that carries their choices, their curiosity, and the memory of an afternoon spent creating together.
The Kiln Has the Final Word
One of my favorite moments comes about a week later when people return to pick up their finished pieces after they’ve been fired in the kiln. Opening those packages together feels a little like opening presents. The colors deepen, the glass smooths and shines, and light begins to move through the pieces in ways that are always a surprise. Every piece is different. Every piece reflects the person who made it.
This Year in the Studio
This year’s workshops will take place in my studio here on Vinalhaven. Working in the studio means smaller groups and a relaxed pace, with plenty of opportunity to explore color, try different tools, and ask questions along the way. Whether you’re completely new to glass or returning for another round of creative play, the goal is the same: spend a couple of hours immersed in color, curiosity, and the simple pleasure of making something by hand.
No experience is necessary. Just bring your curiosity.
Come Join Me
If you’ve been thinking about joining a workshop, I’d love to have you at the table. You’ll learn how to cut and layer glass, experiment with color, and create pieces that capture light in beautiful ways. And along the way you’ll meet some wonderful people and leave with something you made with your own hands. You can see the full workshop schedule on my website.
I hope to see you in the studio.
Peace,
Alison
