Blue on Blue

As we move into summer, blue seems to take over the island. It stretches across the harbor, fills the sky, and follows us through long days shaped by the weather, the tide, and how long we can stay outside before hunger finally calls us home. Time feels a little less structured and a little more generous, and many of the things that matter most become surprisingly clear.

The Story of the Color

One of the things I love most about living on an island are the colors - blue is never just blue. It changes with the weather, the season, the tide, and the light. The ocean that appears deep cobalt in the morning may shimmer with brighter, lighter tones by afternoon. The line where the sky meets the water is constantly shifting, creating new combinations of color that reveal themselves only when you take the time to notice.

Blue on Blue is those summer days when every direction seems filled with shades of blue. Looking out across the harbor, it can be difficult to tell where the water ends and the sky begins. Layers of color blend together, creating a landscape that feels both expansive and comforting at the same time.

By layering rich cobalt blues over one another, this glass captures some of that same depth and movement. As the light changes throughout the day, brighter flashes emerge while deeper tones settle beneath the surface. The color feels joyful and energetic, but it also carries a sense of calm, much like the water itself.

For me, Blue on Blue brings to mind quarry swims on warm afternoons, lobster boats going out to haul, and evenings when the last light lingers long after the day should have ended. It is a color that celebrates the abundance of summer and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by beauty without needing to look very far to find it.

About the Jewelry

Every piece in the Blue on Blue collection is handcrafted in my studio on Vinalhaven Island, Maine. Each begins as sheets of colored glass that are carefully cut, layered, and arranged by hand before being fired in a kiln. During firing, the individual layers fuse together, creating a single piece of glass filled with depth, light, and color.

What I enjoy most about working this way is that the finished glass continues to surprise me. The same piece can look slightly different from one moment to the next as it responds to changing light. A necklace worn outdoors on a sunny day may reveal different tones than it does by a window in the evening. That interaction between color and light is at the heart of everything I create.

No two pieces are ever exactly alike. While each design follows the same process and uses the same glass, subtle variations emerge during firing that give every piece its own character. Whether you choose earrings, a necklace, a bracelet, or a Rivière necklace, you are receiving a small piece of handcrafted color inspired by the changing light, water, and seasons of the Maine coast.

Designed for everyday wear and made to last for years to come, Blue on Blue is a celebration of summer, light, and the many shades of blue that make life on the coast so memorable.
