The Story of the Color

Sometimes a color arrives as a surprise. I had planned to put a piece of teal glass on top as the final layer, but for the first time in twenty-six years I placed the wrong glass there instead. When the kiln opened, instead of the deeper color I expected, the glass had turned this bright, sparkling blue — clear and luminous in a way that almost feels tropical.

Looking at it, I had to laugh. The color looks more like something from the warm southern waters so many islanders head toward this time of year. Meanwhile here in Penobscot’s Bay, the harbor is still cold, clear, and bright under the March sun. Gone South holds that playful contrast — a flash of tropical blue, created right here on a Maine island while winter slowly loosens its grip.

About the Jewelry

The jewelry in this collection carries that same feeling. Each piece of fused dichroic glass reflects flashes of brilliant blue and light, like sunlight dancing across clear water. Gone South holds that playful contrast — a flash of tropical blue, created right here on a Maine island, bright and alive as it moves through the world with you.
